Project of Description:
Bangladesh is a riverine country and it is the gift of nature and low cost transport system. Most of the people of this country use waterways as their mode of transport. Besides, there are still such regions where no other alternative mode of transport except waterways. To facilitate the inland waterway transportation, BIWTA established 11 inland river ports and 303 Launch Landing points. Among those 11 inland river ports Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chandpur, Barisal and Khulna have the utmost importance. These ports had been constructed since 1960-70 depending on the frequency of the movement of vessels and passengers. But within this long period, structures and facilities provided had not been renovated/increased comensurating with the increased numbers, sizes and volume of vessels. Moreover, these structures are very old. As a result, deterioration increases day by day due to berthing of many vessels at a time as well as waterway passengers transportation of cargo are facing a lot of inconvenience. To mitigate this inconvenience, it is urgently needed to rehabilitate maintenance/renovate and modernize those important inland river ports structures including allied facilities. On the first phase Govt. decided to move forward with the river port in Barisal.
