Description of the Project:
The existing port area is supported by several private jetties and marine facilities that facilitate cargo handling and vessel operations. The adjacent river channel is maintained through bi-annual dredging, ensuring a navigable depth of approximately 4.3 meters during low water conditions. During the monsoon season, the water depth increases to around 9.1 meters, allowing improved navigability.
At present, the jetty accommodates vessels arriving directly from Chattogram Port as well as from India. The inland waterways connecting Khanpur with Chattogram and Mongla Ports are classified as Class-I waterways, maintained at a minimum navigable depth of 3.7 meters throughout the year. However, the presence of shoals and narrow bends along certain sections of the route restricts vessel dimensions to a maximum overall length of 70 meters, breadth of 14 meters, and draft of 3.4 meters.
The existing berth consists of two reinforced concrete piled structures designed to support cargo handling and vessel berthing operations. Khanpur Jetty currently handles approximately 40 to 50 vessels annually from India and an additional 10 to 15 vessels from Chattogram Port. These vessels transport an average cargo load of around 500 tons, including grain, steel coils, and various general cargo commodities.
Cargo unloading operations are carried out using either the vessels’ onboard handling equipment or mobile cranes with a lifting capacity of six tons provided by BIWTA. The jetty plays an important role in facilitating regional trade and inland water transport connectivity, serving as a key logistics hub for the movement of bulk and general cargo.
Services Provided:
The consultancy services under this TOR were provided to assist BIWTA in the development of the Inland Container and Bulk Terminal at Khanpur, Narayanganj, ensuring efficient planning, design, and implementation of all associated infrastructure and facilities. The scope included preparation of a comprehensive master plan with 3D visualization and animation, conduct of topographic surveys and geotechnical investigations, and development of detailed architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and utility designs. The services further covered the preparation of detailed engineering drawings, cost estimates, bill of quantities, technical specifications, and tender documents for procurement purposes. In addition, the consultancy included full construction supervision services involving project management, quality assurance, contract administration, progress monitoring, certification of the contractor’s work, and coordination with stakeholders to ensure compliance with design standards, environmental requirements, and timely completion of the project within the approved cost and schedule.
